Utah man pleads guilty to using dark web in hopes to hire someone to kill 2 people

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A Utah man admitted on Wednesday that he used the dark web to try to hire someone to kill two people.

43-year-old Christopher Pence of Cedar City pleaded guilty to using the internet to solicit and pay for two murders.

According to court documents, Pence paid $16,000 worth of Bitcoin to a website dedicated to arrange contact killings.

Prosecutors said Pence gave the names and pictures of the intended victims and asked to make it look like an “accident or botched robbery.”

“The majority of what happens in these cases is somebody believes they are handing information to another criminal but they’re handing information to people who are looking to sting them or prosecute people who are doing this kind of thing,” Pete Ashdown, founder of XMission said.

Pence was arrested back in October in connection to the incident. No one was reported injured.

Pence faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
